I'd like to congratulate Alan Jones on his first place victory in Mississippi Blues Challenge. People from all over the state compete and the winner moves on to the international event. He'll be competing in Memphis in Jan. at the International Blues Challenge.
It is May 28, 1976, the last day of school at Lee High School in Texas. Next year's seniors are preparing for the annual hazing of incoming freshmen. You know the rest of the story.
When I finally heard this band I was completely blown away. I couldn't believe I had never listened to them. Early on I fell in love with Pavement (after Bradley forced me to listen to them time after time - "Man, just listen to this again, I know it's an acquired taste but I think you'll dig it) and couldn't get enough information (as cryptic as it might have been) about them. I think I read every article on the web from 1999 to 2003 there was to read that mentioned them and the majority of which would always mention Guided by Voices (who I was just as in love with), Archers of Loaf (who I would finally get around to giving a chance and loved, thanks Alex!) and Teenage Fanclub as if they were all cut from the same cloth. I'm not gonna start a huge rant about the differences of these bands, their influences or which one I like more (most of you will know who that is). I will go on record to say that this band, this album, this song was one of the most amazing records to play in my 1979 baby blue Malibu on a Delta cruise in the summer. It was the best way to start a ride. I would pop Catholic Education in as I pulled out of the driveway on Gillespie Drive and by the time Heavy Metal (the first track on the album) finished we would be making a left onto Nash Road right in time for the fuzzy bombastic overdrive of double guitar heading right into the sunset.
When I hear this song all I think about is summer league baseball... I know it came out in 1985 but it was still a staple (and probably still is) on the local radio station WNLA during my years of little league in Indianola. The smell of crappy hot dogs and soy burgers go hand in hand with this riff.
I remember vividly practicing for All-Stars and taking a water break when all of a sudden everyone started complaining about the water tasting funny. Finally someone twisted the top off to find a empty beer can amongst the other 11 unopened Beasts (he had been using our water cooler to keep his beverages chilled). Thank You Vic Ware. Do the walk of life, yeah, the walk of life.
You heard me right pretty Pete. Don't look so surprised. You unplugged the needle from your arm long enough to do an intimate acoustic set in London. The reviewers thought that it was the best show they have seen a homeless street beggar put on in some time. The 60 folks who were there apparently liked it too, because they "invaded" the stage. Yeah those people you saw coming after you were real and not some drug induced hallucination. Anyway, as I am sure previously mentioned needle is back in your arm I'll give you the link to the article that NME wrote up on it. You can find the proof that this actually did happen here
Here's a video to celebrate your big night Pete. A song that may or may not be about heroin. Either way, its a really good one.
My father asked after hearing one too many of my knock knock jokes during the arduous journey from Clinton, MS to Seaside, FL. When I first heard of them, I was left asking "Where have you been my whole life?". I guess I'm just behind in the times, or perhaps on my own music adventure. Taking what I find as it comes. Music is similar to religion in that you can't push a "new" band onto anyone. Each person must find their own way to a band and choose their musical path.
With a similar sound to Simon and Garfunkel, Kings of Convenience offer a well composed mellow sound. The bandmates from Bergen, Norway have known each-other since they were ten. After two failed band projects together, Kings of Convenience was formed. Their first album Quiet is the New Loud was released in March of 2001, and followed up by their first remix album Versus later on that year. A great open road driving companion, Riot on an Empty Street, was released in 2004 and has finally made it's way into my CD player, as well as onto my list of favorites. After five years of very few shows and rumors of breaking up, the band released a statement saying their new album Declaration of Dependence is due out October 2, 2009. Insert Carly Simon here.
"I'd Rather Dance with You" is my number four song of summer. It sums up those dollar beer dance parties as well as many other nights spent with good friends. Slash I really love the video...enjoy!
